DLCValve starts testing Steam achievement sets with separate DLC progress

Developers can group achievements and archive unavailable ones; the feature remains tied to the beta client and game support.

Valve has announced the Steam Achievement Sets beta, allowing developers to organize achievements into groups. The announcement was published on October 15 UTC, already early October 16 in Moscow. The structure can distinguish base-game progress from additional content. It is a beta-client feature for supporting games, rather than a mandatory system already applied throughout Steam.

Valve describes a problem with games that keep expanding: an update can enlarge the achievement list and complicate the meaning of prior completion. Sets give developers a way to separate those goals. Each has its own progress indicator, and a previously earned completion acknowledgement is preserved if more achievements are subsequently added to the set.

DLC creates an important distinction. According to the announcement, additional-content achievements do not enter overall progress until the player has access to that content. Totals can therefore differ between friends. That is not necessarily a comparison error: the system is accounting for which tasks a particular player can actually complete.

The refreshed page also supports comparisons with up to three friends, including completed sets and DLC achievements, according to Valve. Developers can also archive individual achievements or whole sets. Players who already unlocked them retain their record, while an unavailable objective should no longer block completion for someone who missed it. The interface thus distinguishes a historical accomplishment from the current ability to perform the same task. Seasonal content makes that difference particularly visible.

Seen more broadly, the change concerns the denominator of a progress measure. A single list is easy to interpret as a stable agreement: so many objectives completed out of everything possible. In a changing game, however, what is possible can shift with content and access. Separate groups make those changes more visible without erasing an existing accomplishment.

Before comparing two indicators, it therefore helps to identify what each covers. In a hypothetical game, one might describe the base set and the other all accessible expansions. Equal percentages would not necessarily represent the same number or difficulty of actions. This editorial example explains why a counter's label matters as much as its visual presentation.

A further benefit of an explicit scope is that returning players can understand which part of their record changed. That is a design goal worth checking in actual games, rather than assuming that a new grouping interface automatically resolves every ambiguity.

Why it matters

Achievement Sets offer a clearer structure for goals in games that continue to grow. The practical effect depends on how each developer organizes sets and archiving. For now, the verified development is the start of beta testing and support in participating games, rather than a completed migration of Steam's entire catalogue.
